TOGA Summary
An ADCP/XBT survey was conducted along 80.5 E from 2N to 2S to map out cross-equatorial current structure. Revelle returned to 0, 80.5E to conduct a 25-day times series that included measurements of surface fluxes, wind profiles, C-band radar, atmospheric soundings, aerosols, sonar-based ocean profiling and profiling of ocean structure including turbulence.

On 02 December, a large-scale CTD/ADCP transect was begun to map out the larger structure of equatorial currents as well as Kelvin and Rossby wave propagation between 80E and 90E.

Radiosonde Profiles

CTDO Profiles
Most cruise days for leg 1 and leg 2 were spent at the stationary observation point (8.0S and 80.5E) to obtain high resolution time series of the oceanic and atmospheric variables. Active convection and moist atmosphere were observed in the first half of leg 1. The high temperature and low salinity in the oceanic surface layer were reasonably observed during this period. The situation turned convectively inactive in the second half of leg 1. Though the oceanic surface layer gradually deepened and was wared gradually with the apparent diurnal cycle, the atmosphere kept dry and convectively inactive. In the end of leg 1 the first MJO was apparent on the equator and northern hemisphere side of the array without any active convection over Mirai.

Most cruise days for leg 1 and leg 2 were spent at the stationary observation point (8.0S and 80.5E) to obtain high resolution time series of the oceanic and atmospheric variables. In leg 2 an MJO event was apparent at the end of the leg. Toward the MJO, the atmospheric condition gradually changed as in PW and radar echo coverage, with the variation of several days. Oceanic surface layer was limted as about 40-m depth where diurnal warming was observed continuously through leg 2. Drastic changes of the oceanic parameters were also observed in the middle of leg 2.
