JOINT OFFICE FOR SCIENCE SUPPORT FIELD CATALOG

Implemented for MAP.

USER GUIDE

The MAP Field Catalog can be accessed via the local network on the CATALOG machine. Please check the notice board at each location for the hostname and IP address and URL of the catalog. This information will also be provided initially at the daily meetings.

All products and reports submitted to the catalog should meet certain naming conventions. If a file does not meet the naming convention, it will not be inserted into the catalog automatically. Files with bad names will be moved to a holding area for renaming or deletion.

  1. Submission of files for inclusion in the catalog
  2.

Files to be included in the catalog must be placed in the anonymous ftp area in a particular directory as shown below:

FTP to catalog machine (insert local catalog machine name here) - ftp catalog

    Login anonymous - anonymous

    Password guest - guest

    Change directory to pub/incoming/catalog/map - cd pub/incoming/catalog/map

Change to binary mode - binary

    Put files – put your_file

    Quit - quit

If your file does not appear in the catalog within 30 minutes the file has been moved to a holding area as it does not meet the naming convention. To check if your file has been moved log back into the catalog machine as follows:

FTP to catalog machine (insert local catalog machine name here) - ftp catalog

    Login anonymous - anonymous

    Password guest - guest

    Change directory to pub/incoming/catalog/map - cd pub/incoming/catalog/junk

All misnamed files will reside here. Resubmit your file after renaming on your machine. If you do not have a copy of your own file, you may down load it from this site now. If you are having persistent problems with files being moved to the junk area ask a JOSS staff member to help you.

  3. Naming of files for submission to the catalog.
  4.

All files submitted the catalog must conform to the following convention:

    name1.yyyymmddhhmm.name2.ext

    where,

    name1 :

In the case of products being sent to the catalog (to be accessed from the product button of the catalog) name1 should be the platform name. This may be NCAR-ELECTRA, METEO-07 or similar.

In the case of products being sent for IOP (to be accessed from the IOP button of the catalog) name1 should be the IOP number. This may be iop01,iop02……iop11,iop12 etc.

In the case of products being sent for reports (to be accessed from the REPORTS button of the catalog) name1 should always be report.

    Yyyymmddhhmm:

This is the 4 digit year, two digit month (01-12), two digit day (01,02….11,12…), two digit hour (00-23), and two digit minute (00-59). Every file MUST have this block. If hour and minute are not relevant they should always be entered as zeroes.

    name2:

In the case of products being sent to the catalog (to be accessed from the product button of the catalog) name2 should be the product name. This may be temperature, visible, IR, theta or similar.

In the case of products being sent for IOP (to be accessed from the IOP button of the catalog) name2 should be the report name. This may be wet_map_operations, science_notes, ELECTRA_flight_report etc.

In the case of products being sent for reports (to be accessed from the REPORTS button of the catalog) name2 should always be one of status, Daily_Weather_report, ops_satatus or one that

Has been predefined by JOSS. Check with a JOSS staff member before submitting a report for the first time.

    ext:

This is the file extension. For all files being submitted to products area of the catalog, the acceptable extensions are .gif , .jpg, .txt, .html only. If you have trouble with converting a file to one of these file types, contact a JOSS staff member for advice.

  5. How to include a figure in a report

If the files you submit have an ext of html (i.e if the report is of type html), then other products anywhere else on the catalog maybe dynamically linked to it.

(i)For IOP documents follow the example below: If you have submitted a file called

IOP02.199910200000.ELECTRA_flight_track.gif and want to refer to it from within a document

In IOP02 the file name is sufficient. This is true for any document referring to any file within the same category, i.e, IOP documents to other files in the IOP area, reports to files in the reports area etc.

(ii) For the case where you want to refer to a file in another category, a path to the category

must be prepended to the file name. For example to refer to a product in the Product are from a document in the IOP area ../product/filename has to be used.
